I'm away from my Linux desktop machine. I need to spin up Rancher Desktop on my remote Linux Desktop machine. So, I thought, lets use the
rdctl
command...
$ rdctl start
About to launch /opt/rancher-desktop/rancher-desktop  ...
[3777253:1217/165903.770587:ERROR:<http://ozone_platform_x11.cc|ozone_platform_x11.cc>(248)] Missing X server or $DISPLAY
[3777253:1217/165903.770632:ERROR:<http://env.cc|env.cc>(225)] The platform failed to initialize. Exiting.
The futex facility returned an unexpected error code.
So, that is a pain in the bum čś× Luckily I could VNC onto my desktop so I could start Rancher Desktop using the graphical tools, but I wondered whether there was a possibility of
rdctl
working remotely?

At present
rdctl
doesn't support the scenario of launching the application remote via command line. At present, the intended purpose of rdctl is to let users start, and use the application on a machine directly or connecting to a remote machine via graphic means such as VNC, Remote Desktop connection etc.

Should I add using
rdctl
in this scenario as a feature request?

Could also consider setting
DISPLAY=:0
or whatever appropriate (assuming you have an X11 server already). (Or possibly use lima directly.)
