the nodes are all managed by rancher fwiw

Are you using a provisioner?
Because if you are, then there's machine pools that manage all the labels and stuff.
It's more of a rip/replace kind of a deal.

no provisioner that i know of. we spin up rancher and then register all the nodes to it
