update check failed in a fun way (again)

I faced the exact same issue for two consecutive days before it finally updated successfully yesterday.
f
Doo you still have a system is this failed state? Can you upload your
update.log
file?
q
i haven't tried to move the system from this state
update.log
2026-07-01T044926.506Z: Update for version 1.23.0 is not available (latest version: v1.22.3, downgrade is disallowed).
looks odd
f
Thanks, that is very useful
Unfortunately this looks very bad. 😞 I seem to have broken auto-update installation in 1.23.0. You run into it because you installed 1.23.0 manually. But now we have enabled auto-updates to 1.23.1. So everybody is going to run into this when it comes time to update to 1.24.0.
@echoing-lock-26650 I assume you were still on 1.22.* or earlier, if the installation worked eventually. I don't see any way it can work again once you are on 1.23.*
q
Ouch
Sorry to be your canary
f
Thanks, it is still better to know now then when we release the next version
q
Can you disable the 1.23.1 update? Or is it too late since everyone on 1.23 is already hosed?
f
We never added 1.23.0 to the auto-updater because it had an issue. But we added 1.23.1 last week. So anybody who has been running Rancher Desktop with auto-updater enabled has been upgraded by now. So it will be most users, I think. If they are not on the updater, then it doesn't matter.
q
Well, you can make a release note that says people will have to update manually
f
At least we still show the release notes, so we have a communications channel to alert users that an update is available, and that it must be installed manually

If that was broken too, then there would be no way to let them know that a new version is available.
We are going to add the blog index to the Welcome page in the next version, so in the future we'll have a backup channel then (it displays only when there are no updates though; maybe need to rethink this)
q
Probably worth rethinking

@fast-garage-66093 True, I was on 1.22.3
