I might be missing something fundamental here, though. I don't consider myself a newbie on sysadministration but I have no clue how to do this and I'd appreciate any pointers towards how I can do this.

At least not the virtual USB from the ASUS/AMI iKVM.
I did not try with a physical USB stick. I can do so tomorrow when I'm at the office.

What are you using is it bare metal installation or nested virtualization?

It's bare metal on an ASUS server.

OK, same issue with physical USB as with virtual USB stick. The 
usb_storage
module shows up in 
lsmod
output but no 
/dev/sdX
. I have managed to find an inhouse tool for uploading large files for the AVIs but don't want to put this on GitHub. In case you forward this internally, can you pass this on? https://limbachgruppe.ftapi.com/download/b7c129bb-f82b-420c-bcd1-431ce78f2e01 The files will be there for 90 days.

It also fails when trying to auto provision by using the disk UUID path. Weird log error of c"annot find default longhorn provisioner."
