I want to use RKE2 ( open source) for my dev ,test, prod env . Is this is a good option ? Could you please tell me what all features RKE2 provides ua on top of vanilla k8s . Can I take enterprise support with this open source project as optional ? And who will provide us that support
c
sure. you’re on the rancher slack so most folks would probably agree that Rancher products are a good choice otherwise they wouldn’t be here. RKE2 is a Kubernetes distro, the docs cover what components it comes with. Support is offered by Suse.
h
Is this optional .means I can use rke2 alone as open source and if I need enterprise support I can opt for the same on top of open source? Is this correct ..?
c
there is no separate enterprise version of rke2
h
I m confused ?
Is this means rke2 is a open source and there is no enterprise support available on rke2 from suse ?
c
enterprise support doesn’t mean closed source. it is possible to get enterprise support for open-source products. that is pretty much the entire suse business model.
h
So , it means we can use rke2 as open source and for enterprise support of rke2 we can contact with suse..Is this correct understanding ?
b
@happy-painting-99638 - Yes. This is correct.
h
What all services they provide in enterprise support along with cost ? Please share the link with me ..
b

It looks like RKE2 is considered part of Rancher as a complete cluster management system. So, if you wish to get enterprise support from Suse for RKE2, it is part of the Rancher Cluster Management offering called Rancher Prime.
h
So is this means I have to purchase rancher first that is enterprise product ..
b
There is no purchasing Rancher. It is also OSS. You are purchasing a support package which entails support for Rancher too, as part of a complete cluster management solution, also including RKE. It makes sense, because if you are serious about using k8s at an enterprise level, you will have more than one cluster, which will demand cluster management automation, which will demand a system to do it. That is Rancher with Harvester and Fleet. RKE is one of the supported k8s distributions Rancher can work with. k3s being the other. The R in RKE means Rancher, right? 😁 As an example, I'm using Rancher and k3s for my personal cluster. It's all open source and no buying anything to get more features. The way OSS should work. If what I am building ever becomes a thing that makes decent money and I have a team working for me, then I'd definitely buy into the Enterprise support, not only to support Suse and keep them successful, but also for my peace of mind. The way OSS is supposed to work.
