Anyone have any recommendations on a "container" OS to run k3s on since k3os isn't active anymore? Would like zfs support if possible but not a deal breaker.
d
Ubuntu runs well
p
Server or coreOS? Been a while since I've done either of those.
d
Sever
Server
Also take a look into Thalos

I've been seeing talos popping up quite a bit too but a bit hesitant on pulling that down - not sure why, lol.
d
or even Flatcar hehehe
but Ubuntu runs nice, is a device? or a server
p
Looking at migrating services from LXD to k3s so want something stable and easy to "upgrade". So server would be nice, would have zfs, but would need to upgrade which is a bit of a pain. Reason I was looking for more of a "container os", like the mention of talos. k3os looked like what I wanted πŸ™

I remember that Suse has some OS that they were working on it but I cant remember the name @numerous-animal-44937

Rancher Elemental is the name, Kairos is another option @plain-fireman-25122

I looked at Elemental but couldn't figure out what it was all about as it looks like an extension to rancher to manage an already installed os??
m
Not an already installed OS. It assists with building containerized SLMicro containers/isos for baremetal edge devices. You build the iso, server boots it and it connects back to rancher as an available host. Then rancher can manage/build clusters using those nodes.
Am not sure if zfs is easily supported on slmicro. If zfs is a requirement, I'd stick with Ubuntu.
slmicro uses btrfs for /
p
Not a huge requirement for zfs but would still need to have rancher installed somewhere and not using rancher currently. Kinda interesting but not sure that's where I want to head for this cluster.

Ok, MicroOS is pretty cool and zfs can be used but you need to match the longterm kernel with the zfs version and no ZFS on root/home. Good luck with what you choose!
p
Yeah, run tumbleweed on my desktop and zfs is a hit or miss on the updates lately. Was running MicroOS a couple years ago on my Pis but only had 3b so was a bit limited. Looking at upping to nucs with some storage and figured it was time to rethink from the ground up. Sounds like everyone is kinda in the same boat I'm at with all the different choices, not really a clear winner yet.
h
if this is for production type environment, I will highly recommend looking over the support matrix for k3s https://www.suse.com/suse-k3s/support-matrix/all-supported-versions/k3s-v1-32/
p
Just home servers with gitlab ci/cd integrations
h
I would recommend openSUSE Leap Micro

@damp-xylophone-94549 as @handsome-elephant-92657 pointed out Micro is great for that πŸ™‚
