I wonder if it would be better if SUSE paid Slack to have a history that stretched further then 90 days.
c
we do, for our internal (customer/partner/internal) slack instances.
f
Yes, but for example when I am searching for issues here I can't find older posts that has the same issue as I have: https://slack-archive.rancher.com/t/23440633/i-m-trying-to-fix-the-longhorn-issue-i-mentioned-further-up-
c
Yeah, thats why I generally recommend tracking stuff on GH issues instead of slack. Slack is not easy to search from outside the client, even if you do have more history.
f
How about a forum instead?
c
there are also discussions enabled on some of our repos.
f
But is that a userfriendly way to handle it?
c
user friendly to me is whatever is most permanent and easy to find via search engines. Requiring people to log into slack and dig through old threads isn’t great.
f
Agree and the forum sucks that exists
c
that slack-archive thing is 3rd party product that needs to be deployed and managed, because there’s no way to get at the slack history outside of the client. that’s not great.
f
Getting results in Google that then just sends me to the front page, doesn't help
I am just stating that if SUSE can't support it's community it makes me worried if I ever would dare to buy a license.
A healty community is important.
I can buy a Red Hat license and I don't need to bug Red Hat for easy things or access some internal slack. I can just solve the issue and open tickets with Red Hat when I have issues that I just can't solve over a simple search in Google.
c
you can also open issues with us on GH… I’m not sure what you’re comparing here.
Regardless of vendor you need a support contract to open a support ticket. You can open a GH issue for Rancher products, same as you can file a bugzilla with RH.
