It's not a new option, it's existed for a while but it didn't work for scheduled snapshots. Check the server docs.

I think I’m misunderstanding then because I’ve looked here and here and I can’t seem to find anything relating to snapshot compression but I did find this issue

I just want to enable it for my scheduled backups but didn’t see a key in the docs relating to it. Thanks for the new docs link
