First you might need a recurring job to backup the volume at regular intervals, and you would have the DR volume synchronized with the latest backup of the volume. IMO doing a backup of the DR volume after activating and restoring it in the prod environment is the simplest way, but yes, you create another DR volume in the prod cluster.
