Matrix introduced Spaces a few years ago as a way to organize otherwise independent "rooms" (i.e. "channels" in Slack jargon), making it easier for communities to introduce a collection of rooms much like we see in a Slack workspace, but with the potential for nested Spaces unlike Slack. I know that Spaces allow a Space admin to change a user's power level (affecting their admin-configurable permissions) recursively, which an example of the kind of administrative control improvement that makes Element a feasible alternative for many types of communities. If enough people are interested, I'd be happy to help configure an initial Matrix presence and set up a bridge to one or two rooms like #general and #random for example. The worse that happens is that people never use it and it eventually gets abandoned 🙂

But matrix lacks Huddles :P

Ah, haven't been aware that this has been introduced.

But the snarky point is well taken; a successful giant like Slack is unlikely to be bested by overall feature count, so the choice for organizations often comes down to whether the freedom and data ownership is worth the trade-offs.
