What other options are being considered? Rocket Chat? Mattermost? Something else?

as someone who loves IRC, why not IRC?

Discord is even worse for web3/crypto spam and bots.

Be good if slack had a report feature…

fine, let's go back to newsgroups then
b
@white-lunch-51379 et al I'm for IRC πŸ˜‰ on the openSUSE side we have a irc-matrix-discord bridge

w
So discord is popular and huge. Can we keep it there? I don't want yet another chat app.
w
yep those bridges function really well, i've seen them implemented cross community and can be good for building engagement
f
I think 2FA should be sufficient. Blocking DMs is a bit too far IMHO. That takes away from networking opportunities.

Generally there are too many available options... An alternative to Discord could be Revolt. The most flexible option would get into the direction of Matrix.
w
my biggest gripe with gated communities is that ultimately then any issue will end up being debugged and solved numerous times over and effort expended, when instead if its the likes of a forum or similar then the same issues can be referenced numerous times in a single thread

@faint-jackal-91811 Blocking the DMs is to ensure we don't run into another quota limit issue TILL 31st January 2024. We will consider opening up the doors once 2FA is enabled and after monitoring the situation adequately.

Thank you all for your input on the alternatives we can consider πŸ’™

Thanks @limited-pizza-33551. I'm okay with a (short) temporary lockdown to get to the next billing cycle.

I would love to see us adopt Matrix, personally
It’s what I use everywhere else.
And openSUSE has a Matrix server already πŸ˜‰
w
Discord, matrix slack are imo the only choices
c
And openSUSE has a Matrix server already
this doesn't mean it is a good idea @kind-fountain-84750
k
sure, but it means that there’s something to reuse if we wanted to go that way
s
Just need a new chat protocol https://xkcd.com/927/

They also use Discord if i remember correctly.

I interact with those folks through Matrix myself

Andrew, reminds me of the one about 14 standards πŸ˜„

I know πŸ˜‚ one day I might rollout some bridges

bring back IRC πŸ˜†
f
We used IRC for years, starting at the very beginning of Rancher, and bridged to here when Slack was added. It was immediately (much) less popular, less useful (threads, screenshots), way more full of spam (mostly related to penises at the time instead of crypto), and eventually freenode imploded.
b
the more things change, the more they stay the same. Just as eris.berkeley.edu was a cesspool due to the completely open nature.... so too has X become, also in California. Free speech is great until you join a server specifically to nick collide them.
w
its a tough topic in general because theres divergence on purpose, in a broad sense i've found theres 2 kinds of categories of conversation - one which is geared towards discussion, insight, learning, networking, whatever and another which is problem specific and aimed at resolving x forums i've found are by far the best for the latter because they are indexed by google and you get a lot of foot traffic and potential marketing through search engines. the former works well in places like irc purely because of it having such a variety of conversations that its possible to learn or gain insight through osmosis. its not to say these are mutually exclusive but just in general broad elements and things to consider when putting together community tweaks

k
it is possible to have indexed/logged matrix rooms, but yeah, usually forums have that benefit
v
@limited-pizza-33551 Just to confirm, this workspace is on the free plan and therefore users such as myself only have access to 90 day history?
c
Not exactly
πŸ€” 1
v
@clever-analyst-23771 Is there any way to see messages older than 90 days?
c
v
@clever-analyst-23771 Perfect ! Thank you so much !

No worries.
