, so it's unclear if this is retried after the compaction has been detected and thus log spam

It just means something tried to access data in etcd that has been compacted. Generally, you'll see this after compaction. Are you seeing any other problems?

I've had too much churn to pinpoint it to this log message, it just stood out while I was looking around for errors.

Well, I'm sort of investigating this error with prometheus:

and that's how I ended up poking around etcd
