Is this the first time you are trying Rancher Desktop? The error message looks like something do with your corporate environment (proxy settings). Can you please enable the WSL Proxy under Preferences and give it a try? Pleae refer this doc more info - https://docs.rancherdesktop.io/1.9/ui/preferences/wsl/proxy

Also, you may want to try the latest Rancher Desktop version that was out just yesterday, that provides additional options for WSL Proxy configuration.

I used both our corporate gateway and a local proxy on my computer (zscaler)

it may be a no_proxy setting as if the intra-cluster calls hit your outside proxy it will get all messed up. make sure the no_proxy is working and keeping the k3s traffic in the VM
