Also, Rancher just manages downstream clusters. they keep running fine even if rancher goes away. It’s just a provisioning and management tool

I have been running rancher for 4-years - as brandond says - run it in HA Kubernetes cluster.
over the years, went thru upgrade cycles for Rancher / kubernetes / OS.
again, as mentioned - read the docs; follow support matrix and your implementation will be just fine
