How many managers in the local cluster? You talking about Rancher instances?
a
Yes, how many managers in the local cluster
a
You can't run more than one rancher instance in a cluster
a
Yes, we have one local k3s cluster with 3 managers running Rancher, and then in prod just one RKE cluster in Rancher
a
What do you mean by "managers", exactly?
Nodes?
a
Sorry, yes 3 manager nodes
a
Rancher can reside on a 3 node cluster. The spec of those nodes determine how many downstream clusters it can manage
a
Each manager node is an AWS instance with 2 cpus and 8G of RAM, the RAM is usually pegged around 65% on each node. We will most likely only ever have one downstream cluster, but that cluster itself has about 120 nodes including 3 etcd nodes, 2 controlplanes, and lots of workers. We've had 3 manager nodes for quite some time but we're growing, wasn't sure if 5 was overkill with those specs
a
Ok cool, so bigger nodes not more. I doubt we'll hit 1500 nodes in our RKE cluster so our current architecture should be good then? We are in an air-gapped environment and I'm trying to rule out things when we have performance issues, sounds like we're good re: the local cluster, thanks for the help
