I'm not sure what you mean by "Rancher" for the internal host name. You can look at https://kubernetes.io/docs/concepts/services-networking/dns-pod-service/ for the way DNS works to reference services & pods inside a Kubernetes cluster, though. Possibly that answers things for you?
