Not sure if you have already looked at these docs: It appears that even RancherOS is not actively maintained: https://rancher.com/docs/os/v1.x/en/support/ And this is the document to view support matrix: https://www.suse.com/suse-k3s/support-matrix/all-supported-versions/k3s-v1-26/

If you want K3S, can K3D work or do you need multiple nodes?
...and that's what I get for not reading further down. As a note, you should be able to use K3D with whatever Linux distro you want, so you could move to a supported distro.

I tried using K3D, but couldn’t get it to work. I was getting the error
Failed to parse cgroupVersion: strconv.Atoi: parsing "": invalid syntax
and couldn’t figure out the cause at the time. I also tried KinD, but it too failed due to network issues. I’ve reached out to the client telling them to get me a new VM, but we will see if they listen.

Yeah, for that my first attempt would be to try a recent Ubuntu or RHEL or whatever distro you're comfortable with. Outdated distro or if you're trying to pass through GPU incorrectly are the only reasons that pop to mind for getting a cgroups error. You could try on your own VM with a newer distro & see. Note there's a #k3d channel if you run into issues debugging.
