this is interesting. I did some reading about Prometheus Federation which is supposed to provide such functionality. and I've been trying to implement it outside Rancher. I haven't been successful yet. Is Thanos found in rancher, or I have to use install it outside rancher?

Yes thanos is available in rancher, you must activate it
